Albert Bierstadt is a notable American landscape painter who was born in Solingen near Dusseldorf (Germany). He showed his talent in painting being a child. He studied in the Academy of Dusseldorf. He travelled a lot across Switzerland and Italy where he gained his incredible experience as a landscape painter. After he had returned to the USA he joined geodesic expeditions of general Lander to Great Plains and Rocky Mountains where he created a lot of drawings, which he further covered with oils in his studio. Bierstadt skillfully used the play of light and shadow and he created landscapes of incredible beauty. He was quite popular, but creation of low-quality copies of his own works spoiled his reputation. He practiced in rock climbing in the Colorado Mountains. One of his conquered peaks in 1863 (4287 meters) was named after him.
